On January 18, 2024, at 7:42 am Sweet Home Fire District was dispatched to a trailer fire in the area of Holley Market. Upon their arrival they found a fifth wheel camper fully involved, spreading to a car parked nearby and threatening a nearby carport. Several passersby called 911 and then helped push a classic car out of the way of the fire. Crews quickly extinguished the fire with one engine, a water tender and two brush rigs.

While fire crews were mopping up, at approximately 8:51am, another passerby stopped at the scene and advised fire personnel of a house on fire approximately a mile away on Hwy 228. Fire crews disconnected their lines and hurried to the structure fire where they found a house with smoke coming from all sides. Fire crews made a quick entry through the front door and extinguished the fire, confining it mostly to the living room. Fire and smoke damage was primarily kept to contents, sparing the structure due to windows and doors being closed. The occupant stated he had been without power and had a candle burning in the living room. The occupant was woken up by his cat while asleep in his bedroom, looking around he noticed smoke and flames coming from the living room. The occupant was able to escape through a bedroom window with both his cat and small dog.

Both fires occurred in an area that was still without power due to the recent ice event and are thought to have started from open flames used for heat, light or cooking. Sweet Home Fire would like to take this opportunity to remind the community that any open flame used in the home should never be left unattended and should always be kept far from any combustible items.
